About Tiny Forest Academy

Tiny Forest Academy is a nature-based outdoor school where children are given the time, space, and trust to learn through play, exploration, and meaningful relationships with the land. Our program operates year-round in all weather and is grounded in child-led learning, emotional attunement, and deep respect for children as capable and competent individuals.

We value slow pedagogy, emergent curriculum, and the belief that connection—to self, others, and nature—is the foundation for learning.

The Role

We are seeking a Forest School Mentor who is passionate about outdoor education and supporting children’s holistic development through nature-based, play-centered experiences. This role is ideal for an educator who is reflective, grounded, and comfortable stepping back to allow children’s curiosity and competence to lead the learning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate child-led, play-based learning experiences outdoors in all seasons and weather

  • Support children in dynamic risk-taking, problem-solving, and cooperative play

  • Build strong, respectful relationships with children based on trust and emotional safety

  • Observe, document, and reflect on children’s learning and development

  • Model curiosity, stewardship, and respect for the natural world

  • Maintain a safe, inclusive, and nurturing outdoor learning environment

  • Support daily routines including set-up, clean-up, meals/snacks, and transitions

  • Participate in land care, site stewardship, and material maintenance

  • Communicate professionally and warmly with families and team members

  • Engage in reflective practice, team meetings, and ongoing professional learning

Qualifications & Experience

We value alignment with our philosophy as much as formal credentials. Ideal candidates will have:

  • Experience working with children in outdoor, forest school, or nature-based programs

  • Background in Early Childhood Education, Outdoor Education, Child & Youth Care, Environmental Studies, or a related field (RECE or equivalent an asset)

  • Strong understanding of child development and play-based pedagogy

  • Comfort working and playing outdoors year-round in all weather conditions

  • Ability to assess and support dynamic risk in outdoor environments

  • Current First Aid & CPR (or willingness to obtain)

  • Vulnerable Sector Check (or willingness to obtain)

Skills & Personal Qualities

  • Calm, grounded, and emotionally responsive presence

  • Strong observation and listening skills

  • Flexible, reflective, and comfortable with emergent curriculum

  • Physically able to hike, kneel, lift, and spend extended time outdoors

  • Collaborative, respectful, and growth-oriented

  • Deep respect for children’s autonomy, agency, and capabilities
